What is WordPress?
In simple words, WordPress is a platform to build, edit and manage websites. It is the simplest and the most popular way to build a website. In fact, you don’t need much coding or design skills to create beautiful websites on WordPress.
Technically, WordPress is an open-source content management system built on PHP and MySQL. WordPress is licensed under GPLv2, which means developers or anyone can copy or modify its code. And that's the big reason, WordPress transformed from merely a blogging platform to a full-fledged content management system.
WordPress alone powers 32% percent of the websites on the internet. Many of your favorites brands are likely using WordPress. To name a few - Van Heusen, PlayStation, Mercedes-Benz, BBC America, Marley Coffee, Time Inc, The Walt Disney.
How does it works?
It has two main Components:
- Themes
- Plugins
Themes
Themes: They are basically a set of PHP, HTML and CSS files that decide the basic Look and functionality of your Website. Also allow you to instantly change the look of your website by changing them.
- At a time only one Theme is active on a WordPress Website and Every WordPress site has at least one theme.
- Allows you to change look and functionality of website
- Decides all front end styling and markup of your Website
- Can be classified into two categories, free themes and premium themes.
Plugins
Plugins: Used to extend the features of your website. Using Plugins you can add/Integrate features to your site like SEO, Google Analytics, Security, Caching etc
- At a time a WordPress website can have many or zero Active plugins. Most website have 10-30 Plugins Active depending on site needs.
- Allows to extend Website features beyond standard WordPress site
- Allows you to create almost any kind of Website by extending features. For Example: e-commerce Website, Social Network, Community Forums etc.
- Can be classified into two categories, free Plugins and premium Plugins.
